On Wednesday, May 3, 2017, with his family by his side, Gene Smith went to be with his Lord & Savior at the age of 87 years, 7 months, & 17 days. He was born in Cushing, OK on September 16, 1929 to the late Luther H. Smith & Nettie (Niehof) Smith. In 1948 he graduated from Cleveland High School & married his school sweetheart, Christine Brooks, in 1949. They moved to Drumright in 1951 & raised 3 children. Gene was employed by O.G. & E. until his retirement in 1987. Following a tragic electrical accident in 1956, he was an inspiration to all those who knew him because of his faith in Jesus, and his courage & determination to overcome his injuries. He also had quite a sense of humor & delighted in playing practical jokes on those around him. Gene was a longtime member & very active in the Drumright First Baptist Church where he served as Sunday School Teacher, Deacon, Trustee, & on numerous committees. He also served on the boards of ASC for Okfuskee & Creek Counties & the advisory board of Business & Industry for Central Vo-Tech. Gene loved farming, raising cattle, fishing, hunting, and spending time with his family; especially his grandchildren & great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a baby SISTER: Sara; & 3 BROTHERS: Danny – Elroy - & Bill.
He leaves behind his loving WIFE of 67 years: Christine of Drumright; CHILDREN: Cathy Smith & husband Bob of Colorado - Carissa Johnson & husband Larry of Drumright - Phillip Smith & wife Cindy of Drumright; 6 GRANDCHILDREN: Clay Smith - Ryland Smith – Justine & Heidi Johnson – Alissa & Christopher Luetkemeyer – Ashlin Smith – Ethan Smith; 4 GREAT Grandchildren: Kallie & Kassidee Johnson – Collier & Christine Pearl Luetkemeyer; BROTHER: Jack Smith & wife Jeri of Sand Springs; & numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives & friends.
Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 8th in the Drumright First Baptist Church with Rev. Jimmie Don Gibson officiating. Interment followed in the Drumright Oak Hill Cemetery.
