Life Story for Harold Eugene ""Sonny"" Wardlow

Dad,

You were certainly a man of many names…. I have heard you called so many different things in my lifetime – Sonny – Sonny Boy – Sunshine – Sonny Souix – Father – Dad - Grandad – Dad Doo – Chief – Sergeant – Sarge… and few other “select names” Mom used that really can’t be repeated here.

You always took such great pride in …. “your stuff”…. Whether it was a broken old gun – old fake jewelry – cheap aftershave that expired in 1973 – rusty old tools that you inherited in the early 60’s and never used – or your old Palo Pinto County Sheriff cap. To allow someone to use – or even look at any of … “your stuff” drew deep scrutiny and interrogation….. And God forbid anyone needing to drive or use “your truck” ……. I shudder to think of the lease agreement my brother had to sign!

There are those here today who might say you were a hoarder…. And maybe you were. You left a lot of “stuff”…… 77 years worth of it… And you were proud of each and every piece. Trust me, I know this….. ….. I’m still trying to remember what I did with the Snap On Tool ratchet set that I borrowed back in 1997 you reminded me about last week.

Although you left us one hell of a collection of “stuff” that we have absolutely no idea how to deal with…. maybe, just maybe, your lesson here is that there is value to be found in everything ….. and value to be found in everyone.

You always told the truth --- even when it wasn’t what someone wanted to hear. But you always followed that up with ….“but hey, that’s just me”.

You taught me so many things…. Always tell the truth – Be yourself – do what is right when no one is looking – that Mom is always right even when she’s wrong – that unpaid child labor is perfectly fine and builds character -- and that Mary Jane is the only sister I will ever have.

Dad, as much as I love you, there’s still just a few things that you and I will never agree on….
• That the Oklahoma Sooners are a great football team
• That Josh Hamilton was the best player the Rangers ever had
• Or that my brother’s hair EVER shined like gold

Go in peace father, for it was in the name of peace that the Great Spirit put you on this earth. You dedicated your life to that mission. You were a warrior among the warriors. You brought peace to your fellow man. You have earned your journey in peace to heaven. Go now, but leave with the knowledge that the impact you had on so many will last forever and a day.
