Norman O’Kelley was called home by his Lord and Savior on September 23, 2019, surrounded by his immediate loving family, at the age of 89, one month away from his 90th birthday. Son of the late J.W. “Bill” and Chloe O’Kelley, he was born and raised in Cushing, attended and graduated from Cushing High School, (class of ’47) where he met and married Charlotte Leavell, (class of ’46). Norman enjoyed his youth as a trumpet player in the band and was an accomplished basketball player. After starting his family in Cushing, working for Meadow Gold Dairies and Great Lakes Pipeline, he moved his family to Stroud in the summer of 1955. He later started working for then Midland Petroleum Refinery which was bought out and renamed to Hudson Oil, where he finished out his career as an instrument technician. He purchased O’Kelley’s Drive-In, which he turned into the major hub and gathering place of Main Street on Stroud’s famed Route 66. After 30 years he sold the Drive-In, moved to Drumright and married Billie Smith-Compton in October of 1985. They loved to travel and made many memorable trips. Norman was a member of Rotary and Lions Clubs, Stroud Booster Club, Cushing Square Dance Club, and Midland’s Bowling Clubs. He also loved the outdoors and fishing and a huge sports fan of any type, but an avid OU Sooner football fan. Norman’s faith was a large part of his life. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Drumright, a volunteer bus driver and worker in their food pantry. Norman is survived by his son, Larry of OKC, his daughter and son-in-law C’Ann and Galan Matherly of Mustang, Step daughter Sharon Owens of Mustang, grandchildren Brandon O’Kelley of Edmond, Michal-Lynn O’Kelley of San Diego, California, Seth Matherly of Yukon, Travis Cackler of Sapulpa, Chris Cackler of Jenks, great grandchildren Braelei O’Kelley, Kennedy Cackler, Avett and Cale Cackler and on the way Madelyn Jae Matherly. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, his brother Bill, his wife Billie, his step son Chuck Compton and his grandson Jaeman Matherly. Celebration of Life will be held at the First Baptist Church in Drumright, Oklahoma, Tuesday October 1st at 11:00 am, lunch following in Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the First Baptist Church Food Pantry of Drumright, Ok.
