Graveside funeral rites were held 1:00 p.m. in the White Rose Cemetery at Bartlesville, OK on Thursday, May 11, 2017 for Drumright resident, Mildred Hays. Rev. Stephanie Stephens of the Drumright First United Methodist Church officiated. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to her grandson’s funeral home, Michael’s Funeral Home of Drumright.
Mildred Marie Hays was born in Copan, OK on February 23, 1923 to the late Elijah J. Cox & Alta Mae (Johnston) Cunningham Cox. She passed from this life in the Drumright Nursing Home on Sunday, May 7, 2017 at the age of 94 years, 2 months, & 14 days. Mildred, or known to some as Midge, was the eighth of 10 children. She was raised & educated in Copan & had lived in & around there & the Bartlesville area the majority of her life. As a young adult, she worked as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell Telephone. In 1958 she married Edwin Alvin “Tuck” Hays & they made their home in Bartlesville & remained together until his death in 1991. In 1993 she moved to Drumright to help her grandson Michael raise his young family. She was a wonderful cook & enjoyed playing dominoes & many different board & card games, especially Uno & Skip-Bo. She was a woman of deep faith in her Lord & Savior; was a member of the Drumright Church of the Nazarene, and for countless years, would read her Bible through from cover to cover. She also enjoyed playing old gospel hymns on the piano. However, nothing was more enjoyable or cherished as much by her as spending time with her grandchildren, great grandchildren, & family. She will be greatly missed by them. In addition to her parents & husband, she was preceded in death by a GRANDDAUGHTER: Suzan (Davis) Fitzer; STEPSON: Larry Hays; 9 BROTHERS & SISTERS: Erwin Leroy Cunningham – Nina Pauline Peru – Lois Genevieve Wilson – Opal Irene Keller – Frances Faye Trippett – Russell Edwin Cox – Leslie Dale Cox – Harold Wayne Cox, & June Lucille Zimmerman.
Those left to mourn her passing include her SON: Gary & Nellie Davis of Drumright; GRANDSON: Michael & Jackie Davis of Drumright; GREAT Grandchildren: Jeremy Onderek – Andrew Davis – Kathleen Davis; GREAT Great GRANDSON: Aiden Bales; STEPSON: Steve & Bonnie Hays of New York, & their family; & a HOST of Nieces, Nephews, & other relatives.
