Obituary for Milton Oscar Skaggs

Milton Oscar Skaggs
Milton Oscar Skaggs

A memorial service for Drumright resident, Milton Skaggs, was held 11:30 a.m. Friday, April 22, 2016 in the Drumright First United Methodist Church with Rev. Stephanie Stephens officiating. Funeral services were entrusted to the care of Michael’s Funeral Home of Drumright.

Milton Oscar Skaggs was born in Oilton, Oklahoma on September 29, 1935 to the late Julian Ross Skaggs & Gladys Wanda (McGuire) Skaggs. He passed from this life unexpectedly at his residence on April 17, 2016 at the age of 80 years, 6 months, & 19 days. Milton was the firstborn & only son of six children born. He was raised & educated in the Olive area & was a 1953 graduate of Olive High School. Growing up in a farming community, Milton learned the values of hard work. After graduation, he joined the United States Marine Corps, training as an air traffic controller. He married LaWanna McHenry on April 17, 1955 & they raised 3 children: Sheryl, Tommy, & Sharla. Following his discharged from the USMC, he joined the United States Air Force and continued his career as an air traffic controller. He excelled in his career & received numerous citations & accolades. Though no fault of his own, in 1967 he received a medical discharge and was forced out of the career he loved due to being diagnosed earlier with diabetes. In 1970, he married Mindy (Williams) Florence & they remained together until 1990. He then married June (Smith) Thompson in 1992 & they have remained together until his death.

During this lifetime, Milton had owned & operated many successful businesses in Texas & Missouri before returning to Drumright and building an OTASCO store. He operated it for many years until the franchise decided to cease operation and close. He then partnered in some oil leases and worked for the United States Postal Service in Bristow. Once again, the effects of diabetes forced him to retire. Milton was very active in the Drumright community not only as a businessman, but as an individual as well. He served numerous years as a trustee for the First United Methodist Church, was a driver to the Oklahoma City VA Hospital for Disabled American Veterans, was a member of the Drumright Chamber of Commerce, volunteered with Sojourn Hospice, the Boomtown Theater, the Drumright Senior Citizens Center, and for numerous years delivered for the local Meal-On-Wheels program. He volunteered countless hours to many organizations & his cheerfulness, caring personality, & smile will be missed by all who knew him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a Great GRANDDAUGHTER: Josephine Wong; & a STEP-DAUGHTER: Shauna Florence.

His remaining family includes his WIFE: June Skaggs of Drumright; CHILDREN: Tommy Skaggs of Jennings – Sheryl Wong of Australia – Sharla Augustus of California; STEPCHILDREN: Michelle (Florence) Adudell – Sherry (Florence) Phillips – Jeff Florence; 11 GRANDCHILDREN – 6 GREAT GRANDCHILDREN; 5 SISTERS: Jackie Larkin & husband Richard of Drumright – Kaye Evans & husband Brent of Garber – Norma Pope & husband Terry of Yale – Marie Allen of Claremore – Robbie Levy & husband Scott of Broken Arrow; also numerous Nieces, Nephews, Cousins, other relatives, and a host of loving friends. Contributions in memory of Milton Skaggs may be sent to: Meals-On-Wheels Program – 510 S. Ohio Street – Drumright, OK 74030. Online condolences may be made at www.michaelsfuneralservices.com.
